how big is she likely to get?

So at 11 weeks, my jrt is standing almost 9 inches tall. I'm hoping she will be bigger than my other who is 11 inches. Her parents were definitely of the longer legged variety, she just looks so tiny! Am I being a bit optimistic hoping for 13 inches ? I do agility so ideally want the bigger end of small.

Feeding a wind sucking yearling

If it was just a yearling and apony turned out o 6 acres I would expect to have plenty of grazing left especially afetr such a mild winter.
I would be looking at putting him somehwere to live out with a fully established herd, no bucket feed just grass and hay to top up, how long has he been living out though and what was his routine before?
I would want to give him 6 moths and see how much he improved over this time, really curious as to what would have a 6 month old foal wind sucking in the first place? Is it wind sucking or crib biting though?

Recurring Ear Infection

Hi,

Just wondering if anyone has any advice; my 13 yro Cocker Spaniel had an ear infection before Christmas, I treated it with some drops I'd had from the vets previously and all seemed to clear up pretty quickly. About 10 days later it came back, so re-treated and all seemed fine again.
However it soon reappeared so I took her to the vets, given antibiotics and cleaner and again it seemed to work, but soon started again, back to vets; this time they took a swab and said it was quite a complex infection which only two type of antibiotics could treat. Followed the course, with metacam for the inflammation but still the same outcome. Next they had her in under sedation and flushed the ear, I was told there was a plug of wax and puss near the eardrum which they removed, she followed a course of oral antibiotics for two weeks, plus metacam and daily cleaning.
Now we are just over three weeks post flush and this morning her ear is awful again; really wet, smelly and lots puss looking discharge. I will take her back on Monday, but just wondering if anyone has any advice really - something to boost her immune system, some other therapy?
In herself she's fine, still up for her runs and eating well, I'm just getting frustrated with not being able to clear this up and I know she's not enjoying going to the vets!
Many thanks - JD

Good towing 4x4

We are looking to upgrade our 4x4 this summer and I'm looking for some feedback on choices.

Budget is 6-9k. Does miles really matter ? but I eeek at over 100'000 when my old reliable but shabby has done 123'000 and is a M plate.

Would love 7 seats as with kids and their friends would be super handy. So thinking Disco 3 or pathfinder.

Husband likes VW Touareg but seats 5.

Needs to be able to tow a 510-( looking to downgrade size to a 506 but will be a few months after car change) and two horses say 1000kg for the both to be on the safe side. I have a b+e.

So let me hear your pros and cons- won't consider a ssangyong and I can't stand that fake wood affect bleggh.

Show Classes for Draft Breed?

I was wondering if anyone knows what ridden classes you can enter a draft breed in? My local shows don't have a heavy horse class, so can I enter a cob class or what would people recommended? Viewed a gorgeous Belgian Draft mare this weekend but no idea what I could do with her! Thanks in advance.

One year on

Exactly a year ago since I lost soli after his horrible injury and stay at the vets. I am at work and could really do without doing someone else's horses as feeling so sad. Don't think I feel any better now than I did then. And so its 1 year 7 months since I lost minto. Pointless post just feeling sad.

Advice for Novice 30

I have decided to enter the Novice 30 as well as Prelim 18 at my next dressage competition. I have never ridden a novice test before so some tips would be really appreciated. I'm very lucky that I have an absolutely fab instructor who is a BD judge herself. She is super supportive and has really pushed me to enter.

We are fine with the test apart from the medium trot. My horse finds it quite hard. We usually end up with a really fast rushed trot instead of a medium. His canter work is spot on. I'm gutted there is no counter canter in this test as he's absolutely fab at that

Any advice would be fantastic.

Thank you

Spring is underway! When are you going back to 24/7 turnout?

Hello all,

Been ages since I've posted but found myself walking up the fields last night on terra firma instead of terra soggy.

Made me wonder how long before the grass starts to come through again, and whether its going to get wetter before it improves. We put ditches in before winter arrived so our fields are so much drier than usual but I do like to keep the horses in at night as long as the grass is still poor. They usually start coming in when the clocks go back and out in May when the grass is well and truly coming through.

This year however I'm thinking I might start to put hay out at night when the clocks change (only a week to go, HOORAY!!) on the trash paddock - if its not gone back to being soggy!

Whats everyone else doing? Do you have a preferred time of year for 24/7 turnout or do you just leave it til its definitely very dry

what next?

Ok so bit of background

Around end of December Ruby became stiff, not lame but just stiff, had her on lunge one day and she just didn't look right, YO watched and agreed not lame but stiff. Gave her a week off and then lunged again and all fine. Within a week stiff in front again.

Pysio came out and noted she was sore and tight in shoulders, back and extremely bad on her hind.

Got saddler out who took a bit of flocking out but apart from that said it was a perfect fit.

Had teeth done, all fine there!

Got pysio back out and hind and back now ok, no improvement on her shoulders.

I've been hacking mostly and schooling doing some bending exercises to help her bend and supple. The last 2 times I've ridden every other stride Ruby has chucked her head up in the air, text pysio and she said sounds like a pain response to her shoulders being sore. Trots up sound on hard and soft ground.

Pysio is coming next week again,if no improvement to shoulders what route would you go down?

I've wracked my brains to think of what has changed recently as never had this problem before, I've had her almost 5 years. Only thing I can think of is that I switched farrier in September as I moved yard. My old farrier left her feet quite flat and long. New farrier is lifting her heels up as said she was very flat before, I actually prefer the way she is shod now. Would this be a cause do you think?

She is quite happy in herself and more then happy to go silly in her field!

Parents of teenagers who lost interest

What did you do?
I have a just turned 16 year old daughter who has exams coming up and just a busier life than before. We also moved further from school meaning i had to take over horse care for the winter as by the time we got back it was dark (we had no lighting). Its now of course easily light enough to ride and do stuff after school but she's just not really interested in doing so. She's quick enough to want to go XC schooling or box up and go jumping but obviously with the poor horse doing nothing in between this isn't good enough.
I am actually happy to continue with mucking out and poo picking if she uses the time to ride (especially right now with GCSE's this summer)
We have spoken so much and every time she swears blind she wants to keep her horse and will ride/do him for a couple of days. I've lost my temper, talked nicely, threatened to loan/sell (i think she knows this is a pretty empty threat as I've never sold a horse in my life).
She has a job on a yard which she still does and which takes a lot of her time- she's still very interested in this and works her ar** off there!
Its annoying because my horse is retired and i cant get a riding horse with the two we already have- that was made obvious by the state of our grazing this winter (being the first at the new place)
So i could of course take him over myself, this would be he obvious but as much as i love him, he is a huge character I'm not sure if he's my kind of horse! I have a dodgy hip which ,makes me feel a bit unbalanced and he's a bit small, very fresh, a worrier and inclined to buck (of course this may well improve if he actually did get ridden regularly)
He's 16 and has a terrible dust allergy which is perfectly manageable but would probably make him hard to sell anyway although he is an amazing little horse and could be huge fun for someone.
In theory he's just what my daughter has always wanted and she never stops talking about him and has 100% confidence in him so i just dont get it, when i was her age i had to share a pony with my sister and hated the days that i wasn't allowed to do him!
What would you/have you done in this situation?

Horse still growing?

I noticed yesterday that with my horse, he looked a little bit like he had become bum high, which as far as I know means he is probably going to grow again (damnit).

However, my horse is now 7 years old. I know that being half Oldenburg and warmbloods mature late, but isnt this a bit ridiculous? Gonna check him again today, but other people confirmed he looked taller at the back end. He doesnt ride downhill ever, he is so uphill and never goes on the forehand, so its not like this is how he is designed either.

He was rather skinny when I got him and was probably rarely fed hard feed by his old owner. He has grown 2 inches since I got him at the age of 6. Anyone else find this a bit odd or is this common with warmbloods?

I'm not overly bothered if he does, I'm 5'8 and mainly legs with that, so if he became 16.3/17hh, it wouldnt matter, but I liked him as he was.

constant barking

As some may know I homed an older collie botch last summer after her owner fell ill and eventually died.
She is about 10 and had only lived with him. Coming to a family with other dogs was obviously a huge upheaval for her but she's now a different dog. She was fat (obese) and very stiff with a definite limp. We managed short walks but that was her limit.
now she is slim, very active and I can't tire her out! (Amazing what weight loss does)
At first she didn't get on with the other dogs at all and when they played she would bark. This stopped pretty much by me giving her attention whilst they play so distracting her.
We have a huge utility room where the dogs beds are and where they sleep. She barks constantly out there (and anything sets her off in with us but not such a problem)
If for example someone gets up in the night or a pipe bangs or one of the other dogs moves she starts. It's consistent rythmic irritating barking which can go on for hours only stopping if someone go's to her. She starts when it gets light most mornings. They are shut out while we eat and she barks the whole time.
We don't have neighbours luckily but my daughter is in the middle of exams and disturbed sleep every night isn't going to help apart from the fact it's literally driving me insane.
Clicker type training won't work as it's when I'm not in the room with her that she barks

Is this unprofessional?

My friend's trainer is very, very good. I used to use her with my old horse and the only reason I changed is because my loan horse's owner has asked me to use the trainer he's had for years.

However, my friend's trainer arrives at lessons with a side-kick in tow who has more or less latched onto her and now seems to be 'part of the package'. The side-kick never asks if she can watch the lesson, she just sits herself down. Once, when another livery was about to start a lesson on her youngster, the side-kick said, 'oh I've been looking forward to watching this!'

My friend invited me to watch one of her lessons, and I sat with the side-kick, who proceeded to not only critique my friend's riding, but also the riding of some of the other pupils the trainer had taught recently. And not in a constructive way either! I was quite shocked.

Having an audience in my lessons has never bothered me, however my friend is having real trouble with her horse at the moment, and the last thing she needs is Little Miss Schadenfreude sitting in the corner lapping it all up to relay to everyone else later.

She's not sure whether she should say something - she doesn't want to come across as all diva-ish and possibly fall out with her trainer (who clearly sees some value in this relationship). I think it is unprofessional, but wondered on others' thoughts.

Heart murmur - possibly caused by virus

My mare came in last night from the field shaking like a leaf (despite feeling warm and rugged according to the weather) and very quiet. Her temp was fine but I called the vet.

Vet took bloods (waiting for results) and suspects a virus. The concerning thing was she detected a heart murmur.

This was not picked up at her vetting as an unbacked 4 year old 2.5 years ago, nor anytime since - although she has always been healthy so can't remember if anyone has listened before.

The vet said it could possibly be caused by the virus. It was on the left side, quite loud but couldn't hear it on the right, and her heart rate was fine.

They will come next week to listen again and see if it's still there and if so she will be referred for scans.

My research tells me the implications
Completely vary according to which heart valve it is...but I was wondering if anyone has any experience?

She's a very talented young horse, my pride and joy and is supposed to be an up and coming event horse, aimed a intermediate/advanced level.

If it doesn't go away is there any chance she would still be capable of that?

Opinions on this horse

After an absolute nightmare with my current horse (I'm sure I'll end up posting about that soon enough!), I have a feeling that I'm going to be horse shopping again in the not-too-distant future, and I want something completely different to my usual type. All I really do is happy hack with the odd schooling session thrown in, so it seems to me that I should probably subdue my natural tendency to look at blood horses, and go for a hardy native or cob type instead.

So, although I'm not officially looking right now, only window shopping, and this might not go anywhere, I wondered whether anyone could see anything glaringly wrong with this little mare. She's local to me, reasonably priced, and has popped up on my Facebook newsfeed the last two days in a row, and something is making me look twice.

people mean well, I know.. but it’s so frustrating at an event when groups gather and interfere , everyone has their way. One of mine often stops at the bottom of the ramp. I know her well, she isn’t the type to take pressure well and sometimes just needs a minute to sort her brain out. If I stand and give her a minute, with a loose rope, she always steps on in by herself! So often though someone see’s this and wades in. Last time, she was about to step in and a complete stranger appeared behind her clapping and shooing. After much eye rolling and reversing, half an hour later she eventually went in. Somehow people always seem offended when I try to politely ask them to leave us to it as well, sigh.

How many drugs can a vet put on one prescription?

This is all I can find and is on a drug company website for pets.

Q. Do I need a prescription for each order/drug?
A. No - you may ask your vet to list several medicines on a prescription for a specified animal. Separate prescriptions are required for different animals.
You may also ask your vet to write a repeat prescription

Ideal flooring when one owns a spaniel!??

Moving house - Yayy..
Can actually CHOOSE to have any flooring, (our very own house!) rather than just coping with what we get given (always been in rentals)

I don't allow dogs on furniture, although Rosie spaniel has adopted a kitchen chair, and they are never allowed upstairs.
Always kept them confined to the kitchen, with vinyl flooring - for ease of cleaning up muddy, sicky, poo'y or wet pups! Rosie is house trained, but it took a while. She will still have an odd wee accident if left over 4 hours in the day, or if, like last week I was left a puddle with no warning - I was in the room with her. I swear she 'forgot' herself! She is now almost 9 months old. Yet to have a season.
Old dog, Whippet X, is well, now nearly 12. She had an upset tum a few weeks ago, as she ate a whole rawhide chew thing that Mother-in-law got her, thinking it was a treat... not sure if that means treat for the dog, or treat for me when it passes through the dog, but there we go... dog, mother-in-law, is now banned for producing such things for old dog.
So, thinking flooring... Vinyl seems obvious, it will be in the kitchen. New house kitchen isn't very big, and there is an adjacent room - going to be our office, which we will have the dogs in, running into the kitchen. Vinyl flooring, and office chairs don't mix - we know this because the chairs ruck up the vinyl, then it splits, then the spaniel gets hold of a hole... the rest is history...
I'm not sure of laminate flooring.... enlighten me with your views on this??
Carpet - fluffy sort, no... too hard to clean with dogs??
Tough (like door mat) carpet possible?? But, is it easy to clean?

Simply put - Carpets and Dogs - ?? How do you cope... especially when bitches come into season?
Any other ideas?

Worming and vaccinations

I've just had my ponies worm count results back and he has a medium count 550 epg for strongyle eggs. I was quite surprised as I've only ever had a low or no eggs seen in the four years we've had him. Anyway west gate are very helpful as always and I was going to go out first thing tomorrow and get equest to worm with.

Just realised that his due his annual vaccination on Wednesday and now I'm worried that it might be too much to worm and vaccinate so close to each other or am I worrying needlessly. Think I will phone the vet on Monday morning but just thought I'd ask if anyone else has been in the same position. Thanks

Pictures 15 year own-iversary and 31st b.day

On this day 15 years ago, she changed my life forever!

A few days before I went to meet Kelsey to see if I wanted to have a share in her, to be the first horse I'd actually shared. But we ended up buying her! when I saw we, my parents bought her for me

She was totally crazy, first time hacking in company (4 days later) she dropped me on the floor, bolted into the woods, then cross a busy A road to take herself back home! This then happened again a couple of years later. How she didn't ki ll me I will never know but I was left in the middle of a few fields on a few occasions haha!

But after about 5 years I moved to a lovely private yard with no other horses in the village, loads of off road hacking and lots of gallop spots! it was then that I realized what an amazing horse I had! I finally started to enjoy riding her and totally trust her! she'd still go a lot faster than I'd like but I worked out that letting her go was the best option, fighting her just made her stronger! we had some amazing rides together

She was retired about 3.5 yrs ago but recently she's had a saddle back on and is finally safe enough to help my 5 yr old niece learn to ride! totally love her!

Hello everyone, I've recently seen a lot of 'exercise saddles' for sale on multiple websites and am just curious as to the purpose of them. Are they just for exercising horses? I have a barefoot trimmer and have hoof boots although they are not fastening round the back of his foot for some reason (they fit fine last year) vet and trimmer say he's got nice feet and he had them x rayed today to check pedal bone which was fine (had lami and rotation 18months ago) Thanks

Problems with farrier, dont know what to do next

I feel your pain, as someone whose previous horse was a shiverer in front, and needed veterinary sedation every time he was shod.

I booked a day off work each time so I could be there, and it sounds like you might need to do the same (or could you work from home once every 6 weeks?).

Ultimately, the only way you will know what's going on is to be there, so you know what's working and what isn't, and can do "farrier desensitization" training in between visits, assuming the problem is a behavioural one.

If the horse is upset and pickling about, the farrier can't do his job properly, and he could get hurt, so of course it needs to be sorted, but I am sure you will be able to get on top of it fairly quickly now you know there's a problem. Best of luck x

Lungeing dilema

Since bill has been feeling a bit flat recently I lunged him today to mix up his work & check his movement to see if tight anywhere.
So lunged him anyway, had lovely loose movement and stretched nicely over back. Then put on side reins, but he got very anxious and came back into himself, and I couldn't get him to stretch into them. Took them off and got the nice stretch again!

Would you stick without the side reins or keep using them?
I don't lunge very often, in fact very rarely, and it's only as I want a stretching session

As for the flat feeling, I've discovered why - quite simply he was bored!! I let him loose in the school for a bit and he took himself over to the jumps and started to jump them by himself
He was having a great time!
So going to add some polework into normal schooling to vary up routine a bit

Muscle wastage/atrophy

Hi guys,

So, I've had the physio out for my boy and there is a ton of atrophy from where his saddle fitted so poorly before and although she was great with giving me a few excersises to work on from the ground, which I've been doing, and lunging; what else can I do to help him gain that muscle back?

In regards to other questions; his saddle now fits well, i've got the Osteopath on Sunday and yes I'm scared I've broken my horse.

What colours suit black horses?

Being black, I imagine you are lucky in that most colours will suit her.

I've gone (mainly) royal blue with my bay, as he is a boy after all! I personally like quite girly colours for mares so if she was mine, I'd be looking at pinks or purples (or teal, but I imagine that is harder to find) But that's just personal preference

Anyone with experience of horse penis removal?

One of our horses has had to have his penis removed due to cancer and he has been rerouted to urinate out the back like a mare. Everything has gone really well and he is now getting turned out again with our 3 other geldings after a month of box rest.

Now here's the thing, the other geldings are now acting like he's a mare. They're bickering over him, following him round and after he urinates they all get very excited and sometimes start (sorry can't think of the most pc way to describe it) pleasuring themselves around him. He in no way reciprocates their advances and actually seems a bit perplexed by the whole thing so he obviously isn't feeling like a mare (why would he anyway!).

Initially we thought it was simply that they were confused by the change in plumbing but there is really no denying the stallionish behaviour.

I know it sounds completely crazy and you probably have to see it to believe it but we're all completely baffled by what's going on and were wondering if anyone else had heard of or experienced anything like this? Thanks in advance.

Microchips

This is probably a thick question, but when you scan a microchip does it just give a number and then you have to look up the number on a database to find the owner. If so, is there a central database or is it like the horse freezemarks, there are several data bases and you need to find the right one ? Barley water and spooky horse - update

My horses spooky behaviour has gradually increased since Xmas to the point I dreaded riding him. This escalation of spooky behaviour coincided with him getting injured in a competition and his workload going from light to medium work to practically non existent – he was walking straight lines for 20 mins a day and was only going out onto a sandpit for up to two hours a day. In the end I got the physio out to investigate his atlas (one of the symptoms of an atlas being out of alignment is spooky behaviour) and she checked his back also. His back was found to be a little sore, but nothing of any significance and this was remedied by a session of physio and a better saddlecloth. His saddle was also checked by the saddler and given the all clear. I cut down on his hay and his feed (although he was hardly eating anything) and I inceased his feed balancer as I had cut it down and I had then read that decreasing this could cause such behaviour.

I got the vet out straight after and he was given a thorough examination, his eyes were checked, his teeth were rasped and the site of his injury was checked and nothing was found that could be contributing to the spooky behaviour, no sharp teeth, no eye problems and I was told his leg was coming on really well in terms of recovery, another six weeks and I can start canter work. In the end I asked the vet if I could put him on a bute trial as people on the forum suggested the reason he was spooking was due to being in pain although I didn’t think this was the case, - I have had this horse for a number of years and know him inside out. A friend had also ridden him and thought he was just ‘full of beans’ this was my impression also.

I decided to put him on the two week bute trial of two bute a day, and as I had thought, this made no difference at all he was just as spooky.

Then suddenly over the last five days his behaviour has improved so much. Hacking out three times this week he has hardly spooked at anything, incredible considering what he was like the week before and in the weeks previous to that. Last night I was able to ride him in the school for twenty minutes without him spooking once, and we did our first trot poles for three months without any spooking at all. He was a superstar and didn’t put a foot wrong, I was so pleased with him I couldn't stop patting him.

The only thing that is different is that the Y.O has stopped giving the horses boiled barley now that the hunting season has finished and the liveries are no longer getting the barley water which has run off from the boiled barley. Has anyone else found either barley or boiled barley water has made their horse behave in such a way??

Great Eaves Farm, Stoke - Horse Shopping

Thank you LHIS. Same here - someone mentioned them on one of the social media sites, so I took a look.

I might get shot down for this, but the part Welsh in the breeding lines concerns me a little as I don't want anything fizzy. I've only ever ridden 2 Welsh cobs and one was very safe and placid in an arena, but was a known bolter when out hacking and the other one was very sweet to handle, but very fizzy and hyper to ride... and he also bolted at every opportunity. So I'm hoping someone can give me a little info on the temperaments of farm's breeding lines.

Beat my personal best and got my first ridden frilly!

I'm not a competitor - the thought fills me with dread, I'm more of a playing with youngsters type. Up until now I have done two intros and scored just shy of 60% on both of them (both within 0.5%) But... recently I have had 2 Enlightened Equitation and have felt a dramatic change in how my mare moves. I entered the local Intro A and not only did I bear my personal best by nearly 6% (64.58%), I came 4th. Delighted with the result as it was my mares first time off the yard in months and we hacked there for about 45 minutes too.

Not the best shots as she was rather tense and shouty but much better than last time (not that that is difficult).

Magazines what do you buy? & Content 'v' Volume & Best Value

Good Afternoon HHO

I am sure we all have purchased a magazine at some point; either a 'ooo I quite fancy a read' or on a subscription basis. I had a moment of 'ooo' earlier and purchased a copy of a leading name of magazine, on picking up said magazine it felt thick and therefore I assumed I would be getting Best Value. I undertook a little analysis of the magazine to better understand the Content 'v' Volume:

166 nr pages in total
32 nr pages allocated to a specific advert which could be obtained for FREE elsewhere
27 pages of adverts
4 pages of averts for the magazine itself
2 pages of classifieds
3 pages of horse adverts
11 pages of product placement [by this I mean Win This / Tested etc ...]
Producing a total of 87 pages of content including F&B cover, indexes etc ...

An average of 4.9 nr pages between adverts; 9 being the highest and 1 the lowest.

Yes I may becoming across like the Victor Meldrew of the magazine purchasing world, yes I should have had a flick though and yes I should not assume BUT at £3.99 and over 50% of adverts - do we not deserve better?

What defines your purchasing style and do you feel you are getting best value?

*grumble over*

Honey doesnt work on Labradors :(

One of my labs decided to charge through a bramble bush (still unsure why!), resulting in lots of superficial cuts and scratches all over him.

For some reason I thought after cleaning them just dab a bit of manuka honey on them... seemed like a sensible idea!

Well within 2 mins the other two labs had him pinned to the floor and were giving his a thorough licking as he was covered in food! So have just wasted some expensive manuka honey by feeding it to the dogs haha

Pointless really but made me laugh so thought i would share

Napping Advice

My ex racer tb mare has the awful habit of napping.

It comes about either when she's excited or when I work her, walk her out to rest and then try to continue with the ride afterwards. The trouble starts.

She's no in any sort of pain she's previously been checked from head to toe and I know its a behavioural thing.

The usual is to initially stop, put her head down and walk backwards unto whatever is behind her. Sometimes I can snap her out of it depending where we are, usually my method of attack is to release my contact entirely and give her a couple of good kicks and if I get no response give her a couple with my whip - on the neck is more responsive. She gives me rear threats but if the location we're in isn't to awkward i.e. obstacles then I can usually win - which is so important with napping.

but if we're in a built up area with other horses, cars etc. then I usually resort to getting off and walking her forward then getting back on, in fear of damaging a car or reversing into a horse.

She's not horrendous but I'm just wondering if anyone has any other exercises, tricks, anything else I can try when she gets a stroppy episode.

Any comments much appreciated, thanks for reading

Am I Right or Wrong....Should I tell...

I would tell him , if he decides to sell the foal your doing it no favours unless of course you are going to try to acquire it yourself .
On the mare going back to stud I would discuss your concerns with the vet and see if he will talk to the owner .
Poor you a sad place to be .

2 months in, anyone for a hoof ogle?

I know there are a few hoof pic lovers on here so this is Doodle 8 weeks shoeless after 20 years in shoes.

Near fore:

Off side:

I *think* her wonkiness to the inside might be improving? Not the best pictures, need to get my angle more consistant, but I really think her 'bad' leg (near fore) is getting better?

Love this picture as look at the weirdness of the inside heel of her near fore in the background

Need to take some picture more of the inside heel I think as thats where all the interesting stuff is happening . We've had a boot change, couldn't stop the fusions rubbing and as her feet have definitely changed shape moved onto the Easyboot Epics, though can't see them lasting for long before I need to go down another size...

Struggling with stones at the moment, she's a little more footsore than she was, not sure if it is spring grass coming through, the ground drying up, a stage she's going through, or a change in diet I've done. Though as the diet change was after the increased in footie'ness think I'll will wait and see how she's doing before making any more changes.

She's still sound on the smooth and in boots , though still only on hacking duties no idea if she will be sound on a circle in the school, though not sure at her age this is 'that' important .

Hello from North Yorkshire

Hello my name is Maureen and I am retired and living in a quiet village between Selby and Howden. I own a sweet little Fell pony called Archie who came to me on loan with some issues which we have quietly worked through and as since turned out to be the sweetest and most gentle person you could meet. He still as a few issues of confidence. I purchased him 1 year after the loan started and never a regret.

Treeless Saddles

Hi Any one on here using Easy Trek treeless saddles, As I have one and am very impressed by it. The things I like are Quality, Comfort, and style. and at the moment cannot fault it. I have ridden a 11.2hh welsh and 14hh Fell pony and both went well with the saddle.

Older ponies-does age put buyers off?

The age would put me off yes. I want to know that I have a decent chance of at least a decade with horse in full work before I have to start slowing it down, and paying out more for the associated costs that come with an older equine, as to be honest I can't afford to care for an older horse AND have a younger, fully fit one to take out and about. Of course there are exceptions, many horses are now working and competing well into their 20s, and just because a horse is younger doesn't mean it wont break itself in the field the day after you buy it, but that's just my preference.
I can't help but feel sorry for older horses being sold because they no longer do the job the owner wants..often 'to 5* home' etc etc. Not that I'm saying this of you OP, as it sounds like you are responsible owners looking for a good home with a sound and fit pony, just see it a lot on Facebook and selling sites in general.

Croup high horse

Think I'm just after a bit of reassurance that a slightly croup high horse can still do 'stuff'.

I've worked really hard over the past year to make sure he's working properly and has finally got a good amount of muscle in the right places.

Before I owned him he was ridden in draw reins and it has taken me nearly 4 years to get him to relax and reach forward rather than assume the head and neck position draw reins encouraged.

I never lunge with any aids or ride with any for worry that he we go overbent. I do think him being slightly croup high also aids this habit.

I am very interested in dressage - though can't imagine ever competing affiliated - but I think I just want to know others opinions on a croup high horse?

When he works properly we have been managing some basic lateral movements e.g. leg yielding, shoulder in and shoulder fore. My instructor has been getting us to do this on and off circles to encourage suppleness and try and get him to sit back on his hocks and use his bum more.

Any opinions?

Yards within 15 miles of Fareham

Hi, I'm looking for two diy or assisted livery spaces or sole use within 15 miles of Fareham. Decent hacking is a must, school a bonus or one to hire nearby. Year round turnout. In at night over winter and either 24hr to or overnight to in summer.

Finding it difficult to find two spaces, tried all the usual places, nfed, Facebook etc.

Any suggestions gratefully received!

Protective boots which ones ?

My small w cocker went on a walk last night including some farmers fields to get home have a shower ( she was filthy :-) ) after 5-10 mins she started furiously scrapping / rubbing her feet on the carpets then chewing at them wimpering :-( I washed them again and put Vaseline on them but this went on for most of the evening poor sole . So I'm looking for some robust boots for her but there's so many, I don't want to pay too much as I'm sure she will loose them ?!? Or would paw wax do the job ? I'm thinking it's something that's sprayed on the fields as no problem on canal or roads just tracks next to crop fields

Confidence Issues

So I'm progressing with my riding slowly but surely still struggling with the canter but this is just a nerves issue me thinks. It's so much faster than the trot albeit a more comfortable stance.

How do you get through your nerves when riding. Other than breathing obvs. Someone told me to sing as it not only calms you down but the horse too.

Any tips?
