Advice urgently needed for little rescue dog

Little rescue dog aged 6 years not clean in the house. Making slight progress by treating as puppy with frequent trips to the garden. I need help with the poos as she often goes during the night even after being taken out really late. I thought maybe need to feed at different times to try and have her need to go at more appropriate times.

Currently she is fed at about 9.30 in the morning and 4.00 in the afternoon. She has been with me for about a month and mid April I will be away to look after a family member after an operation and my husband will be coping so really want this to be better before then.

She is not stupid but her start in life was so bad that she has not learnt any of the basics and was badly beaten up and is slightly disabled because of this.

Not sure how long after eating (dry food) it is digested and she would need to go and poo.

Any help and advice would be great as am getting nervous about leaving for 2 weeks in April.

Riding in a strong bit all the time....

Re read my post through and wanted to mention 99% of the time he's a doll. He lives out 24/7, eats only a lite balancer. He has his back and teeth done every 6 months, he's had a full vet check including radiographs and he is 100% fit happy, well rounded boy. He simply gets a bit happy go lucky and he is 16.1hh of long legs and formula 1 type power and I am 8st on my heavy days, little legs and twig arms .

Altering fit of fly veil

My fly veil arrived today in the post and when I tried it on, it didn't seem to go all the way over my horse's ears. He's cob size in a bridle and headcollar, but I bought the full sized veil so I can't send back for a bigger one. Is there any way I could manually adjust it to fit my horse better or did I waste £12?

Getting a young horse on the bit

I have a 5 year old Connemara who I really would love to progress further with in dressage. I only got him 6 months ago and we've focused mainly on jumping, as he was a hunter in Ireland right before I bought him over and we had to calm down his jump. Anyway, he's barely done any flatwork and I've been working on improving his transitions, forwardness, circles, responsiveness and voice commands for the last 4 months. He's doing really well in all of these now, and my instructor told me that when I had achieved this he would be ready to start being asked to drop onto the bit and knuckle down to some proper, balanced flatwork.

Would you agree that this is the right time to start some heavier training with him? He's pretty fit, but he doesn't enjoy being in an arena all that much if we're not jumping anything, so I've kept flatwork short to avoid him getting bored and teaching himself bad habits. Any advice on other things we need to improve on first would be great!! I'm currently training him to back up under saddle and understand pressure from one leg aid rather than both.

I'm aware I'm taking everything very slowly and carefully with him, but he's my first horse and I really don't want to mess up and do something wrong as he has real potential as a jumping horse. I just think we need to improve our flatwork before progressing further in jumping. Thank you

Any experience with Maine Coone cats?

I have very sadly lost my 14 year old Silverpoint Persian (Kleintjie) to cancer about a month ago. Two surgeries had given her a bit more time, but we were thereafter forced to go for the euthanasia option due to the location of the new tumor and how agressive her cancer was.

Her half sister (Grumpy, a Chinchilla) is still crying out and looking for Kleintjie ! We bought them together from the same breeder as kittens all those manyy years ago - they had the same dad but different mums. Grumpy is only happy if I'm there to constantly give her cuddles and groom her, and she sleeps on my chest of my cushion with me.

I'm seriously considering getting a kitten again, in the hope that it will help Grumpy to forget her friend of a life-time, or at least focus her on something else. I've just seen some Maine Coone cats advertised and they look gorgeous! Because we've also got 2 dogs (a Staffie and a Shih Tzu) I think it may be the perfect choice as they seem to be very sociable with other pets.

Do you think I should go for a Chinchilla/Persian again, or would Maine Coone be a good choice?

Thanks in advance for any input.

Soya Oil vs Linseed

I'm interested in peoples opinion of Soya Oil. General benefits and reasons for adding to feed as opposed to using Linseed ?
Are there benefits for mares (as in women ?) Also, if I buy in large quantities, does Oil go off/ rancid (if warm) as I would only be feeding one 14.3hh

There is some grass I would like to move my horses to, but it is alongside a growing oilseed rape crop. It is probable that the horses would nibble at the leaves. I know it is the cabbage family, but is it OK for horses to eat?

Name suggestions for registration

Hi, but basic but currently am not in the creative zone. I need to register my horse but have found that she's passported unnamed so I'm trying to think of a good name and failing.
Just wondered if anyone is creative and could help with suggestions.
Her stable name is Diamond.
Looking at her breeding there's a lot of royal connections....namre including the following titles;
Princess, lady, king, emperor, countess, hussar
"Star" is also mentioned on both sides
I would like to potentially carry on that theme/link
Any ideas 😳

'Gas' as an anaesthetic for dogs?

[unable to retrieve full-text content]

Do you have any experiences, anyone? Alec. 'Gas' as an anaesthetic for dogs?

would you buy.......... number plate

a personalised number plate in the name of your horse of a life time?

a lady at my work has a step daughter with the same name as my horse! they bought her a number plate at auction and she didn't want it (goodness knows why)! so she's offered it to me for what they paid for it!

now I have had my mare 15 yrs and she is now 31, so don't know how much longer she'll be around, so is this a good way of celebrating her life?

When can she start working?

Hi all just looking for some advice, my mare aborted her foal today 7 months it was pretty terrible by all accounts but she is doing fine and been checked by the vet. She is 4 so just wondering what people would suggest in terms of her starting some work? Obviously I will leave her a few weeks to let everything settle down as she is quite sore but how long do you suggest I leave it?

Thanks in advance

Towing again after an accident

Hi all

Last year I had an accident where an artic lorry made contact with my horse trailer causing it to snake and flip with two horses in and put me in the barrier. Luckily we were all ok! Since then I have only towed once with my horse in who travelled like a gem!!! But even with an empty box any movement and I feel myself get tense and worried.

I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on how to get my confidence back towing?

I don't know of anyone local (south wales) that does lessons as I am desperate to get back out competing but the thought of towing makes me feel sick!!!!

Hungry horse!

I have just bought a 4YO TB, bred to race but too slow and sold on to me, she is still growing so I understand she will have a big appetite but she seems to be always hungry! She has a massive haynet every night and a very big dinner then is out in the field all day (not short of grass at all, they always have their heads down) I am slowly in the process of changing her feed but what do you all suggest I can feed her to help her put abit of weight on but to also fill her up??
Thanks in advance

White brushing boots

I'm on the look out for some new white brushing boots to warm up in at competitions. I want some that wear well and come up white in the wash that aren't going to go yellow after a few washes. So far I'm looking at the woof wear double lock boots and the fleece lined le mieux. I prefer the look of the le mieux but am worried that the natural fleece lining will stain very easily??? Any recommendations please!

Dubarry boots sagging ?

Ive had my Dubarrys for about 18 months and they have been worn a lot but not round the yard or for riding, I’d like to think I’ve looked after them. However 1 boot has suddenly sagged at the ankle and the other hasnt ?! It means my left boot is ending up sitting about an inch lower on my calf than the other one, it’s not a good look and feels very annoying too Has this happened to anyone else? For the price of them I’m disappointed as previously I had a Toggi pair that lasted 5 years.

Passed vetting. Failed x-ray

Advice please peeps...

I have been looking for a new horse since christmas, tried 5 now. Number 4, i left a deposit and arranged a vetting.

I really liked her, foot conformation not great, ground manners not great but i really enjoyed riding her.

5* vetting passed without issue. The one x-ray that i chose to do -spine (because way too many horses have ks and i didnt want one).

X-ray show no kissing spines but 2 areas with little gap and some bony changes/re-modelling. I walked away butcant stop thinking about her! Nothing ive seen since compares.

She is only rising 6 and quite low mileage so i was shocked to see the changes.

Would i be mad to have her? Anyone experience naf spine x-rays and no future problems?

Ripping reins from hands - advise please

Looking for some advice 😊

I have a rising 7 year old ex racehorse, who I have owned since August last year. He hacks well alone and in company, has begun schooling well and has been introduced to poles and a small cross jump. He has a bad habit of head shaking and pulling his head down repeatedly yanking the reins out of my hands in certain situations. These situations seem to be either when he is nervous (new hack route or new arena) or excitable (shown a course of jumps or on a fun ride or after a canter.) He is ridden in a thin French link snaffle and a running martingale, bridle and flash. Saddle fits, teeth up to date, physio and sports massage regular, had a vet check up only 3 weeks ago and was gastro scoped in September which came back clear. I am confident this isn’t a health or discomfort issue, and feel it is just a habit. Both my flat and jump instructor have advised that to be blunt, he seems like he’s taking the p*** when doing it and to give him a firm but fair tug back on one rein. When I do this, he stop but then carries on. I can normally work through what he does, but I went to a clinic yesterday and he was SO excited! He popped everything I asked from trot, but following the jump would nose to ground, rip the reins from my hand, then id re-gather them and he would do it again. I was jumping on the buckle to ensure he could have him neck but still would throw his head around. Midi doesn’t do it in lessons now as he knows the school and instructor and is familiar.

Any ideas on how I could help him out of this would be appreciated. I’d love to be able to go to local shows and dressage but beings as they are ‘nervous and exciting’ – it’s just a no-go at the moment! Thanks

What outer-jacket do you wear at events?

On the search for a new jacket for wearing at events and over my show jacket for warming up etc. - what does everyone wear? I wanted something a bit more shaped but think a blouson may be the easiest way to go as they're big enough to go over a jacket? Nothing overly hot!

Recruitment within the industry

Hello,
I am currently in my 3rd year of my degree studying towards a BA (Hons) Equestrian Management and Development. For my dissertation I am carrying out research into the recruitment methods within the equine industry. I was wondering if it would be at all possible for you to fill out and distribute a short questionnaire to contribute to my research.

http://ift.tt/1Ln2tKl

The survey is for anyone who works/has worked or owns a business within the equine industry. The survey takes less that 5 minutes and the outcome will be very beneficial to the industry.

The Survey is getting closed on Wednesday 2/3/2016 so all responses are greatly appreciated

Thank you for your time

How do you feed hay in the field?

We are considering a Haygain steamer as we have 4 to feed - they are not all RAO but have to be turned out together. Anyone use one? Or any other recommendations?

Any particular feeders you would recommend? I currently use wheelybins with a hole at the bottom as it's the only thing I've found that stops them wasting loads - will steamed hay "expand", as I'm worried it may not drop to the bottom as well as dry hay, and if not I'll need to rethink.

Thanks!

Back on Board and First Attempt at Action Cam!

So after a strangles scare my girl has been cleared and her runny nose and cough is much improved. Vet has advised I can start doing a little walk and trot work so I decided to have a little ride and finally try out the action camera I got for Christmas!

It's very shakey (especially in trot) and I need to figure out a better way of attaching it, This video it's tied around the front of my bodyprotecter. If anyone has any tricks on how and where to attach it please let me know

There is a little cough at the end and lots of me chattering on haha but she was a good girl after a month off and she's rising 4 so we've only really backed and done a bit of hacking. Hopefully once she's 100% we can get to the local indoor and get her training going properly

Waddingtons in Hockliffe on the A5 Dunstable

Dressage It's just a tilt to the left and jump to the right

Our first dressage after regionals was yesterday and I thought my aims were acheivable :
- stay on,
- soft and obedient
- no airs above the ground
I actually did manage all three .

Topaz had other ideas of what we should be aiming for:
- keep mud on some part of her,
- get a flying change in there somewhere,
- find something better to eat than the new balancer!
She also managed all three .

First up was E57, and I still think it is the hardest elementary and a horrid test! We don't like med canter on a circle and everything just seems to happen very quickly! Did a slightly shorter warm up for it thinking of my second test, and she felt brill really listening and very good in the contact, think we 'may' have sussed it . Could have done with slightly longer to get her totally connected, but she was on it for a lovely soft test, had a little launch to the right away from the flowers but settled beautifully. Rein-back was spot on which was nice, as it was towards the new bench which she'd been eye-balling so feel with our new mega contact it's doing the job at keeping her attention, and by mega contact I mean I'm actually riding her up into one . She did face-plant the simple changes somewhat , so the on the fore-hand comment was very justified , but at least she was enthusiastic about it . Also we got the comment of head tilting in both leg-yeilds, her not me ... This is something that has been mentioned before but I've not payed much attention to it , I'm assuming it's a lack of suppleness through the poll? Any idea's of how to combat anyone?

We managed an amazing personal best at this level with 69.11%, first in my section and beaten on collectives for second overall! Even bought her some polos to celebrate .

Onto the second test, I had maybe a rush of blood to the head and made a rash descion, but decided enough novices and entered the medium , M61 so a very kind start to our Medium attempt. She came out to the second warm-up clearly very pleased with herself for her awesome elementary win, so very buzzy and excited, got her second aim for the day by putting a flying change in the extended canter we were practising , it was very expressive . She then was tired, bless her she had been very good so far and was really trying very hard! Into the test, now I am not a fan of sitting trot in general, but we had a moment trotting down to the start where we were in lovely harmony and it was just one of those times to hold onto, I wasn't bouncing and neither was she . She was a little tired so a very obedient but slightly disconnected test, always a bit odd to have to really ride her forwards. Maybe the gallops the day before was a little much for her, but listening and lethargic is much better than wild and spooky!

Came away from out first proper medium debut with a fabby 66.03%, first in my section again and fourth out of 13 overall!!!!!!

Now I may have ignored a bit of advice and gone ahead anyway, but really I'm chuffed to bits with her and just knew it was the moment to try it for real, live for the moment right .
